Through a partnership between Tutti Arts and Co-art Studio in South Australia and South Korean art organisations Peeling Media and IZZA IZZA, Lewis will spend a week working in the Artspace Seochon studio. He will collaborate with artists there on an exhibition. Lewis and Tutti Visual Arts Coordinator Patricia Wozniak will also make a presentation to Sungkyunkwan University. Next year, a disabled artist from South Korea will undertake a residency at Tutti Arts.

When the opportunity for a cross-cultural artistic residency presented itself through Tutti’s developing connections in Seoul, South Korea, Lewis was immediately enthusiastic. Lewis had met visiting Korean visual artists from Sungkyunkwan University at Tutti in 2023 and it sparked in him an interest in going to Korea.

Lewis is feeling “happy” about the upcoming trip, saying, “I speak Korean words, eat yummy food. I speak at University.”

The impact of cross-cultural exchange like this is incredible! It breaks down barriers, fosters international connections and elevates disability arts practice globally. On a personal level, artistic residencies create many opportunities for artists to explore and experiment which has long-term impact on an artist’s life and work.

This pilot project is supported by Arts South Australia and Artspace Seochon.
